RESERVOIR SANDSTONES OF NORTHWEST BORNEO, 22 - 25 SEPTEMBER 2011

Facies, sand body geometry, tectonics, and more!

NW Borneo is well-known as one of SE Asia's oldest and most prolific petroleum provinces with billions of barrels of production in the nearly 100 years since the initial discoveries.  Despite this illustrious history, prediction of reservoir properties and sand body geometries remains difficult because the depositional setting of the sandstones that reservoir the hydrocarbons is not as well understood as may be expected. This, in turn, is at least partly due to the fact that classical facies and sequence stratigraphic models do not work well in NW Borneo's tectonic, hydrodynamic and climatic environment.

The objective of the field trip is to give participants an overview of the reservoir sandstones of NW Borneo. The focus will be recent concepts about NW Borneo's depositional systems and stratigraphic development as they relate to the prediction of reservoir properties and sand body geometry. The field trip will visit two areas within Malaysia; it will begin on the island of Labuan and conclude in the Miri-Lambir Hills region of northern Sarawak.

Your Host: Joe Lambiase

Itinerary: Thursday September 22: Fly Kuala Lumpur to Miri on 8:40pm flight. Friday and Saturday morning outcrops by bus from Miri, Saturday 11:20am flight to Labuan, Saturday afternoon and Sunday outcrops by bus from Labuan, return to Kuala Lumpur on Sunday 25 September afternoon flight at 5:20pm.

Price: SGD 700 includes meals, drinks, accommodation, flights out and back from Kuala Lumpur, bus transport and field trip report; SGD 550 if you get yourself to Miri and home from Labuan (i.e. If you do not need to connect with Kuala Lumpur – perhaps you live in Borneo)

Further information can be found in the trip brochure at this link.  For further questions contact Dylan Mair (dylan.mair@ihs.com) +65 9834 5531.
